Did you like that the book was written in the first person, through Dana’s voice? Do you think it would have been better as a third person voice, overseeing all the events?

I like that the book was written in the first person through Dana’s voice, because it’s more direct and reflective. It’s like Dana is talking to me personally, and it makes me closely engage to the story.

Through Dana’s perspective. the history of slavery becomes more vivid and alive to me. I can relate to Dana and sympathize with her. So I like the first-person (Dana’s) angle better than a cold omniscient angle.

I prefer the first-person mode, although the third-person would have made the reader more comfortable and aware of the situation. But then it wouldn’t be as immersive and desperate as experiencing it in first person, so the first person would be more immersive.

I agree with you, guys! If Dana were a third-person narrator, she would have assumed the role of overseer, which in turn, would take away the emotional connection that the reader forms with her 1st-person narrative, especially since it is so gut and heart-wrenching! This way we experience all of her traumas through her, almost personally, if you will! Actually, Kaiming, I love your use of the word “immersive” here, because that is exactly what I am trying to argue!
